Ruminations ~ The Need For Compassion

~ Our World is in Need of Compassion ~

If there’s one thing in the life of Jesus Christ, which set Him apart from the religious sect, it was His unwavering compassion for humanity. Many times throughout scripture, it was His compassion that drove Him to minister to the needs of others when, even His own disciples refused to do so! If there’s one thing our world is desperate for today, it’s people who have the heartbeat of Jesus!

In Luke 19, Jesus looks upon a crowd, and was deeply moved with compassion, because He saw sheep with no shepherd!! They were all lost, and wandering aimlessly, groping for some sort of hope!!

Our world does the same today!! They walk about in their selfish ways, and have allowed sin to rule their lives!! It’s caused people to cross boundaries, invade the decency of others, and allowed immorality to run rampant!

Yes, humanity can absolutely jade us with their dehumanizing ways, but we cannot allow it to callus our hearts!! Too many people have allowed the sins of humanity to harden their hearts towards the very people we are all called to reach! The heart has hardened, and it’s caused the skin to become thinner!! We have allowed people to offend us to the point we’ve withheld compassion in our hearts!! We are in desperate need of a softer heart and thicker skin!!

Luke 9 tells us, Jesus sought to pass through Samaria to minister one day, but He received word that He wasn’t wanted…James and John asked, should we call down fire from Heaven and consume them?

His Response — “But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save [them]. And they went to another village.”

Our spirit is wrong when we say, “you can’t fix stupid.” Our spirit is wrong when we withhold compassion for a world we are called to reach! Don’t allow the sins of others to rob us from ministering to a world that’s broken and in desperate need of a Saviour!! We are His ministering hands on this Earth!!

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 1 John 3:16-19 (ESV)
